Concept of magic
This is an extremely complicated topic, but I'll try to make some sense of it. Magic in kemetic orthodoxy isn't what magic is to, say, a wiccan. Our "magic" is called heka, which means "authoritative speech".

Thus, heka is words (more or less) - thought, spoken, written. Words are very powerful in our faith. Prayer is heka (in a way, our only "magic" is the power of prayer). Heka gains more power through action - such as writing things down, or performing a ritual. Action makes words more tangible.

What we say echoes in creation: words can wound deeply on an inner level, and words can encourage and build up confidence. That's an important reason not to insult, belittle or make fun out of anyone, yourself included. That kind of thinking or acting has an impact on more than one level. Heka, good or bad, is your responsibility if you use it.

So, heka is obviously not to be abused - it must adhere to ma'at, and so you shouldn't, as an example, pray for something that derives someone of their personal freedom (manipulative heka), or for a thing such as vengeance. If used correctly, heka can bring protection, strength, or even healing of one's soul or spiritual body. Amulets still serve that purpose within the Kemetic Orthodox faith.

The pen is indeed mightier than the sword.
