Misconceptions
Kemetic orthodoxy is a creepy, destructive cult! Take a look at this list. Compare. We have a certain hierarchy, yes, but as I've previously stated, we're free to think for ourselves, leave at any given time etc. We don't worship our Nisut (AUS). We don't give up family, friends, hobbies, or even other religious practices when joining. Our behaviour and beliefs are not in any way controlled. We answer when asked about our faith. We don't give up our income to the temple (it's all voluntary donations), nor do we "recruit" in any way - this website, for example, is merely for information, not converting you. ;) Also, we don't claim to copyright the truth - everyone has different needs, and KO isn't for everyone. Personal gnosis can be achieved anywhere, organized religion or not.
We worship the Nisut (AUS). She is our leader and teacher, and She does have the kingly ka within Her, but She is not a god/goddess. We don't worship Her, and She has told us that She doesn't want us to. Nor do we follow Her blindly - we're not obedient sheep, we all hold different beliefs and opinions.
We slaughter and sacrifice animals to our gods. We don't do animal offerings. No cats for Bast, no birds for Heru, no fresh meat and warm blood for anyone. Some Names dig raw meat, but we aquire it in less messy ways!
We worship statues. We certainly don't! It's true that we keep statues, figurines or icons in our shrines, but we don't worship them. We worship what they respresent and stand for, not the objects!
Kemetic orthodoxy is the "official" name of the kemetic recon religions. KO is merely a name of one specific path of kemetic tradition in modern times. Whoever told you otherwise didn't have their facts straight. :)
Egyptians really called their religion kemetic orthodoxy. Nah, the ancient egyptians didn't call their faith anything - it was a natural part of life, and didn't require a label.
We hate Set (Seth, Sutekh). Actually, we don't think Set is evil. He's a Name just like Ma'at or Heru. Set is necessary chaos, among other things, and not some "evil god" or an equivalent of the devil. We have Set kids, Set beloveds, and we all get along. ;)
We think aliens built the pyramids. OMG! UFOs, yay! I have yet to meet any kemetic orthodox who really believes that. As some sort of recons, we're more likely to research historical and archaeological facts than conspiracy theories. :P
"Orthodox" implies a strict and puritan living. I'll admit that I was a bit intimidated by the word "orthodox" in the beginning - my thoughts wandered to some monk living on water and bread, reciting prayers at sunrise every morning. But that's not what it's like. We call ourselves orthodox purely because we don't bend the rules as much as other kemetic paths may, when it comes to modernizing our traditions, or at least that's how I interpret it. So we're not "strict" nor puritanical in nature, and we don't "pronounce judgement on you for being too lax," to quote Kai-Imakhu NiankhSekhmet. ;)
Thanks to everyone at the House of Netjer forums for helping me compile this list!
